I'm not saying it's your fault, I'm just blaming you.

Well, today makes my first week in my new home. The one thing I don’t like is that I got nobody to blame for my faults and shortcomings. You see, I had a few potty accidents in the house this week, and I am sure they were not intentional (or were they ;). When I got here, there is this other small grey furry blob that lives here and my humans call it a cat. Me, I call it a play toy if I can every get a hold of that thing, but they try to keep our distances because they think she might not like me either. Anyway, they have no kids, and they obviously didn’t have the accidents, so I got stuck with the blame. Have you ever had that happen to you?

Hard to believe in just a little over two weeks, my wife and and have been married almost 9 years! Where has the time gone? There was a running joke when we first got married (and I guess now I think about it isn’t that funny anymore, strange how conviction works when you least expect it), I told her something similar to this mornings quote, except I said no no matter what, I’m blaming you. Just be sure you understand that before you say “I do!”. This is a terrible way to start off a life together, but by God’s grace, we have made it this far.

Reminds me of another couple, more famous than us, but not in a good way, so famous in fact, that God had man make record of it and put it in the Bible. You remember the couple and the story, don’t you? Well, let me refresh our memories just in case.

Genesis 3:12-13 –  The man said, “The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me fruit of the tree, and I ate.” 13 Then the Lord God said to the woman, “What is this that you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

Why did they not just come right out and blame God while they are at it? Oh wait, they did, just not directly! And so it was a very long line of blameshifting people that were born in this corrupt world, acting just like their federal father and mother, and eventually became one of the biggest traits of what we call narcissism. But it goes much further and deeper than that today, and this was just the seed of many tares to come that Satan had planted in God’s garden of people.

Look at how many characteristics these weeds have grown into over the years!

  • Have an exaggerated sense of self-importance
  • Have a sense of entitlement and require constant, excessive admiration
  • Expect to be recognized as superior even without achievements that warrant it
  • Exaggerate achievements and talents
  • Be preoccupied with fantasies about success, power, brilliance, beauty or the perfect mate
  • Believe they are superior and can only associate with equally special people
  • Monopolize conversations and belittle or look down on people they perceive as inferior
  • Expect special favors and unquestioning compliance with their expectations
  • Take advantage of others to get what they want
  • Have an inability or unwillingness to recognize the needs and feelings of others
  • Be envious of others and believe others envy them
  • Behave in an arrogant or haughty manner, coming across as conceited, boastful and pretentious
  • Insist on having the best of everything — for instance, the best car or office

In turn when not kept in check, it manifests even further and with serious consequences, like:

  • Become impatient or angry when they don’t receive special treatment
  • Have significant interpersonal problems and easily feel slighted
  • React with rage or contempt and try to belittle the other person to make themselves appear superior
  • Have difficulty regulating emotions and behavior
  • Experience major problems dealing with stress and adapting to change
  • Feel depressed and moody because they fall short of perfection
  • Have secret feelings of insecurity, shame, vulnerability and humiliation

Doesn’t this sound a lot like the way the world is today? Sadly it is much of the way many churches have become as well, and there is only one cure for this great ailment of the flesh, and that is repentance and the Gospel of Jesus Christ!

You see, we can continue on the wide road of destruction and mayhem, but there will be a GREAT cost! Or we can do it God’s way and let Him guide us on the narrow path, and that by the power of the Holy Spirit, He will shows us the areas of narcissism in our lives.

We can be cured individually and corporately, but the question is, do we truly want to be healed? If so, we need to become humbled much like all who Jesus has healed in His day. They knew that in order to get physically healed, they would have to seek the Great Physician. However, they were only seeking a physical healing, and yet Christ gave them even more, by telling them “Your sins are forgiven” or “Go and sin no more”.

God knows when we are serious about being healed from our sins who will come while they can, and who will not, and those who do come, He NEVER turns away!

May you spend time in prayer this day, seeking the sins that you need to be cleansed from, for daily self-examination (2 Corinthians 13:5) prevails much.

Ephesians 2:8-9 – For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Let this part of the fall humbly remind us that we are full of sin apart from God, and without His help and His healing us through the Gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ, we will have no good thing in us! Even in the garden of Eden, God was rich in mercy and the foreshadowing of His Son to come, in that He slaughtered the innocent by blood in order to cover the guilt of sin.

If you truly are born again and saved, should we not always be keeping this at the forefront of our minds and to battle against the things of this world? Be sure to thank Him and praise Him if you are blood brought, saved, and sealed by His Holy Spirit. For only HE is worthy to be praised, honored, and glorified.
